Distance: 7 mile round trip to Nevada Falls
Elevation Gain: 1,000 feet (300 meters) to top of Vernal Fall; 1,900 feet (580 meters) to top of Nevada Fall
Mist Trail, one of Yosemite's signature hikes, is a strenuous day hike to two of Yosemite's famous waterfalls - Vernal and Nevada Falls.
Best time to hike the Mist Trail is from March till June when the flow of water in the falls is high. You can hike it in Summer and Fall as well for the scenery but the waterfalls might have dried out. In winter, the trail may be closed due to snowy and icy conditions.
The trailhead is at Happy Isles area and you can catch the shuttle bus from the Yosemite Village parking area. From the trailhead it is about 1.3 miles and 1000 feet elevation to Vernal Falls. This is also the most crowded part of the trail.
The hike is not easy on the knees. It involves climbing lot of steep rocky steps and uneven terrain. As you get closer to the falls, the path gets wet and slippery because of the mist from the falls.
The crowd thins out after Vernal Falls and you can be alone most of the way to Nevada Falls.
Carry lot of water, some energy bars and lunch. Enjoy a picnic at the top of Nevada Falls where you can relax on a large flat granite surface.
Restrooms (Pit Toilets) are available at the top of Nevada falls, Vernal falls and also near the bridge before reaching Vernal Falls.
